EU, IMS Train Women Journalists Ahead of 2023 Elections

The Institute for Media and Society, (IMS) with support from the European Union, (EU) has commenced a two days training on Building Digital and Multimedia Storytelling Skills for Women broadcast journalists.

The training, which is an activity under the Support-to Media Component of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance (EU-SDGN) Project, is also targeted to enhance the skills of women ahead of the 2023 general election.

At the commencement of the training in Jos, Executive Director of the Institute Dr Akin Akingulu explained that the training would improve the professional capacity of women journalists through exposure to digital tools, technical know-how and relevant methods for digital skills while still maintaining a fair, accurate, ethical and inclusive coverage of the electoral process.

“Women journalists cannot access appropriate level of participation in the coverage of the electoral processes that is a common knowledge, a major limiting factor in their participation is the skill gap particularly digital multimedia story telling skills, we reasoned therefore to improve professionalism, deepen voters and civic education and strengthen inclusivity thus women journalist skills should be updated”.

Dr Akingulu urged the participants to take advantage of the opportunity available to them and step down the training in their respective organisations 

President, Nigerian Association of Women Journalist, (NAWOJ) Ladi Bala noted that training and retraining is important in enhancing the capacity of workers particularly for journalists.

“The media space is so dynamic and with the evolvement of new media platform, even the information technology available, it beholds on us to acquire new skills on how best to deliver on our responsibility to Nigeria” she said.

The participants were drawn from various broadcast media outfits across northern Nigeria.

UN, Media Executives Sign MoU to advance Gender Equality

Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Representative in Nigeria The UN Women in Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding  with several media organizations in Abuja to advance gender equality and women's empowerment.  On September 8, media executives from the southern part of the country signed a similar undertaking in Lagos. Experts Advocate Increased Women Leadership in Biodiversity

  Hadiza Abdulrahman  Experts have advocated increased inclusion of women’s leadership in biodiversity to strengthen sustainable and effective conservation strategies. This was the focus of a roundtable on Women and Biodiversity Leadership, held under the Scientific Diplomacy Programme organized by the Embassy of Spain and the Spanish Cooperation Office in Nigeria, with support from the European Union. The roundtable on women’s leadership in biodiversity highlighted the crucial role of women in biodiversity conservation and discussed strategies to close the gender gap in biodiversity science.
