Spain, Dubawa trains Nigerian Journalists on Fact-checking, Cybersecurity

Casa Africa, in partnership with the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria, and the Centre for Journalism Innovation & Development (CJID), through its verification platform Dubawa, have trained 35 Nigerian journalists on methods and technology to combat disinformation.

The training an initiative of the #PeriodismoÁfrica program of Casa África, seeks to bring Africa and Spain closer together through educational, economic, cultural and informative activities.

The Director General of Casa Africa, José Segura Clavell, explained that the alliance was necessary to help strengthen the capacities of African journalists in fact-checking and digital security.

“We believe that these skills are essential for a quality journalism that can inform citizens and combat misinformation that can undermine democracy and human rights,” he said.



The Executive Director at the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, Dr. Tobi Oluwatola urged media professionals to use artificial intelligence (AI) for digital literacy and verification.

While the ambassador of Spain to Nigeria, Juan Sell, remarked that one of his nation’s goals is to encourage a free, independent, reputable, and competent media, both in Africa and elsewhere, adding that it is a requirement for a vibrant and inclusive democracy.

A participant, from Abuja Broadcasting Corporation, Afolashade Azeez said she would utilise the news skills learnt to enable her be at par with the digitally terrain.

The participants were exposed to advanced fact checking methods, artificial intelligence utilisation tactics, and digital cybersecurity.

UN, Media Executives Sign MoU to advance Gender Equality

Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Representative in Nigeria The UN Women in Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding  with several media organizations in Abuja to advance gender equality and women's empowerment.  On September 8, media executives from the southern part of the country signed a similar undertaking in Lagos. Experts Advocate Increased Women Leadership in Biodiversity

  Hadiza Abdulrahman  Experts have advocated increased inclusion of women’s leadership in biodiversity to strengthen sustainable and effective conservation strategies. This was the focus of a roundtable on Women and Biodiversity Leadership, held under the Scientific Diplomacy Programme organized by the Embassy of Spain and the Spanish Cooperation Office in Nigeria, with support from the European Union. The roundtable on women’s leadership in biodiversity highlighted the crucial role of women in biodiversity conservation and discussed strategies to close the gender gap in biodiversity science.
