By Hadiza Abdulrahman
The
Hadis Foundation, with support from the European Union in Nigeria and the
International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), has
equipped radio broadcast journalists with innovative practices and guidelines
for reporting on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
The
training themed “Pathways to Inclusive Justice (P2iJ) Media Convening”, is part
of preparations for the upcoming 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based
Violence, organized under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC)
programme, which seeks to leverage media influence to advocate for stronger
action against SGBV.
The
Chief Operating Officer of the Hadis Foundation, Rashida Mahmood, highlighted
that the training was designed to prepare journalists for their critical role
in society, equipping them with the skills needed to effectively report on SGBV
during the 16 Days of Activism, starting on November 25.
Dr.
Amina Salihu, Chair Board of Trustees of Hadis Foundation, stressed the
importance of using accurate language when reporting on SGBV,
noting that the way journalists convey these stories significantly shapes
public opinion.
She
urged the participants to approach such cases with empathy to preserve victims'
dignity and privacy.
ROLAC
Project Manager, Oluwatoyosi Giwa added that the training would reinforce efforts
to call on the government to enhance its response and prevention strategies for
SGBV.
In
addition, NAPTIP’s Director of Information and Communications Technology,
Hakeem Lawal, shared insights into the agency’s initiatives, including the
Sexual Offenders Register, which aims to enhance public safety by identifying
convicted offenders.
According to Lawal, NAPTIP has processed 1,679 SGBV cases, leading to 338 convictions, with about 870 in court.
The representative of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Ebi Emezua, emphasized the ministry’s commitment to providing evidence-based data to tackle gender-based violence and ensure justice for SGBV survivors
