UN Women Enhances MDAs’ Capacity for Nigeria's 3rd National Action Plan on Women’s Peace and Security
The UN Women in Nigeria has move to strengthened the capacity of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) towards the effective implementation of Nigeria’s 3rd National Action Plan (NAP) for United Nations Security Council Resolution UNSCR 1325, aimed at promoting women’s peace and security.
At a three-day capacity-building workshop on Implementation, Compliance Monitoring, and Reporting of the 3rd National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 held in collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy, UN Women Programme Manager Mr. Peter Mancha highlighted that the training would enhance systems for sustainable, multisectoral implementation of the NAP across federal and state levels.
He urged participants to carry forward these strategies within their organizations to foster widespread accountability and compliance.
This training will enhance their capacity to understand what it entails to implement, monitor, and report. After the training we will launch it official, we are waiting for the Presidency to fix a date, when its officially launch between this November or early December, once its officially launch that not just government MDAs, Civil Society Organization , the media, security all sectors are able to adopt it and see how they can adopt it in their different levels because the development is to ensure all these sectors are engaged.
It is a multisectoral consultation so that we can own it. We leant from the first and second national plan there was no wide consultation and people did not own it. This time we made sure the consultation is wider and their is acceptability. Despite, in Africa, Nigeria is rated as one that has done well. Mali some few years ago when they wanted to develop their 3rd National Action Plan they sent a high delegation to Nigeria to come and learn, he said.
He added, Currently, 16 days states in Nigeria have domesticated the National Action Plan, what we call state action plan. So, it shows we still have a long way to go. The goal is to domesticate it in the 36 states
The Director Women Development, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Friya Bulus represented by Mr. Cletus Bakpet called on participants to approach the training with an open mind to effectively implement policies on women’s peace and security in their respective agencies.
"It is pertinent to note that, part of the strategies implored to ensure accelerated progress in the implementation of this 3rd NAP is aligning of the document with the present administration’s 8th points agenda and linking of its priority areas with the mandates of various MDAs seated in this room today", she.
Adding that, "The major purpose of this is to increase ownership, encourage multi-sectoral
implementation, secure present administration’s political will and then
eliminate whatever bottlenecks that narrowed the implementation of the first
and second NAP and other policy documents on promoting gender mainstreaming, women
empowerment and protection of women’s rights"
The Mrs. Esther Mishelia, emphasized that the training would support
measures to integrate the roadmap across all sectors, including private
security, where women and girls are particularly vulnerable. UN Committee on Elimination
