Women from across Africa have converged in Abuja for the Young African Women Network Congress, YACW network aimed at advancing economic women’s empowerment to the continents through Technology and Innovation.

YACW Network Executive Chairman, Mr. Daniel Tuffuor, explained that the 2024 theme, Enhancing Women’s Economic Empowerment through Technology and Innovation, seeks to close the digital divide and leverage technology to elevate women's roles in Africa’s growth.

Mr. Daniel noted that technology is a powerful driver of change in today’s world, emphasizing that Africa cannot afford to fall behind in the digital age.

The Country President of YACW Network, Dr. Eunice Emmanuel, called on African countries to implement policies that support women’s empowerment in technology, driving sustainable development across the continent.

"Today, we are called to action, not only to ensure that women are participants in the digital economy but to see them thrive as leaders within it. To achieve this, government participation and policy support are imperative. African governments hold the unique power and responsibility to set frameworks that foster equitable access to technology and encourage women's involvement in fields traditionally dominated by men"

She stressed, that by investing in policies that promote inclusivity in technology, governments can directly influence the journey of empowerment for women and place Africa on a sustainable path toward prosperity.

According to her, "Economic empowerment begins with access—access to quality education, vital resources, and the networks necessary for growth which must support educational initiatives that arm women with the skills they need to excel in tech-driven industries.

Adding that programs like coding boot camps, mentorship schemes, and STEM initiatives must be genuinely inclusive, extending opportunities to women from all backgrounds, particularly those in marginalized communities.

She further noted "We must advocate for equitable workplace policies that ensure women can participate in, thrive, and lead in the tech economy. This includes addressing pay inequities and promoting family-friendly policies that support a balanced work-life dynamic. In addition, governments play an essential role in dismantling stereotypes and building frameworks that encourage diverse leadership"

The FCT Mandate Secretary for the Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, reaffirmed the current administration’s commitment to empowering women and enhancing their livelihoods.
